HTC Touch

The HTC Touch was targeted as iPhone killer. It has the latest innovations in pocket PC technology that it can be used by fingers itself instead of cumbersome stylus. Launched mid 2007, this phone is based on newest Windows Mobile 6.0 featuring all new touch swipe technology. It comes in 99.9X58X13.9 mm package weighing 112grams. The screen is 2.8 inches TFT touch screen with 65k colors, good enough to be seen in sunlight but with direct light, the contrast fades away. The resolution is 240X320 pixels, but this meager resolution makes such a big screen show pixels clear enough to be distinctly seen.

Being based on Windows Mobile, it has excellent hand writing recognition with five way navigation technology. The essence to the name is that it is possible to use the mobile without use of the stylus stick by simply flipping the window panes in the screen by fingers or thumb. It features 40 chord polyphony with MP3 ring tones.

The phone has an inbuilt 128MB ROM and expandable with MicroSD cards with a 1GB card included in the package. For the connectivity purposes it features standard GPRS class 10 with data rates upto 48 kbps and EDGE with speeds upto 384 kbps and 802.11 b/g “WiFi”. File sharing and close group communication is made easy by the Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP profile for stereo headset support. To connect with a PC, it has miniUSB port at the bottom.

For browsing it has pocket Internet Explorer and further Opera 8.61 is available for use on this device. Since the HTC Touch features Windows Media Player 10 and the device lacks an FM tuner which does limit the music to only memory storage. The overall quality of music is fairly adequate thanks to WMP 10.

As part of the operating system, it contains the viewer version of Pocket Office with support for Word, Excel and PDF files. Java MIDP 2.0 is supported so that it too can share games and other applications as used on other mobile phones.

The HTC Touch comes with a camera that contains a 2megapixel unit which lacks both flash and auto focus resulting in images which can be dull and out of focus. Video capture is also basic gpp format not even mp4 format. The battery life is also fair for moderate users with a charge lasting for a day or two depending upon limited email checking, one to two hours of music, a little WiFi usage and 30 minutes of calls.

Available in soft black, white, burgundy and green colors, the phone is exquisite delicacy with the thickness being comparable to Motorola’s Moto RAZR.

With nice swipe flow technology, this phone is highly recommended.

T-Mobile Sidekick 2

July 21st, 2008 admin Posted in Reviews No Comments »

An older member of the Sidekick family, the Sidekick 2 is still able to offer the novelty of a "flip open" screen and above average utilities for the texting fiends.

Like many other phones, the Sidekick 2 features a camera on the backside of the phone, along with an adequate flash. Picture quality is not great, but it gets the job done. Unfortunately, the Sidekick does not allow users to send or receive picture messages (although it does allow users to email pictures).

Sound quality is average, but the loud speakerphone is useful for hands free driving. T-mobile provides Sidekick users with their own email address @tmail.com, and the phone's email utility allows for quick and easy access to this account. The Sidekick also allows users to access their AOL email accounts, but sync times are often longer. Instant messaging is easy with the AIM application which allows for multiple conversations.

The phone contains 32mb of RAM allowing for storage of pictures, emails, and ringtones. Internet browsing is relatively easy with the Sidekick's web browser but unfortunately it is not compatible with all websites. Load times are relatively fast if you are in a medium to high service area. For those addicted to texting, the phone's full QWERTY keyboard is a very nice feature which allows for quick messaging. The raised buttons make them easy to press for even those with larger hands.

For those unaccustomed to the Sidekick, the size and weight can be a major turnoff. The phone does not fit easily into a pocket and is often hard to carry. Also, unlike newer phones the Sidekick 2 lacks Bluetooth compatibility preventing users from utilizing the use of wireless headsets. Younger audiences may disapprove of the sidekick's lack of customization options. Virtually the only things the user can customize are the screensaver and ringtone.
